How many toilets does OSHA require on a jobsite?

OSHA Table D-1 sets the minimum: 20 or fewer workers need 1 toilet. With 20 or more workers, provide 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. With 200 or more workers, provide 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. A PJN3 unit holds 1 seat and 1 urinal.

200 or moreOne toilet seat and one urinal for each 50 workers
Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1. Sites without a sewer may use chemical toilets like ours.

The rule is a floor; your general contractor or inspector may ask for more. Our OSHA jobsite toilet guide walks through the details.

What does weekly service include?

Every jobsite rental of 7 days or more includes weekly service. Each visit has 4 steps: pump the 60-gallon tank, wash and sanitize the inside, refill blue deodorizer, and restock toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Waste goes only to approved disposal sites under SCDES Regulation 61-56.1.

  1. Pump the holding tank.
  2. Wash and sanitize the seat, walls, floor and urinal.
  3. Recharge the tank with blue deodorizer and water.
  4. Restock toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

South Carolina licenses businesses that clean self-contained toilets under SCDES Regulation 61-56.1, and waste must go to approved facilities.

How does 28-day billing work on a job?

Construction rentals bill in 28-day cycles, not calendar months. The price is the same whether the unit stays 10 days or 28 days in a cycle. The first cycle carries a one-time delivery fee. Call or text when the job ends, and billing stops with the cycle that contains the pickup date.

Job lengthCycles billed
5 days (roof)1
3 weeks (remodel)1
6 weeks (framing)2
5 months (new home)6

No removal fee at the end. Long jobs auto-bill each cycle; approved business accounts can pay by check or ACH. More detail on the long-term rental page.

Roofing, framing and home builder jobs

Roofers usually need 1 unit for 3 to 7 days at the driveway edge. Framing crews of 8 to 15 need 1 unit with weekly service for 4 to 8 weeks. Home builders often run 1 unit per lot through drywall, then move the unit to the next house on the street.

  • Roofing: set the unit away from where shingles and nails drop off the roof edge.
  • Framing: crews start early in summer, so we place the unit where the service truck can reach it before 7 a.m. crews block the drive.
  • Home builders: we move units between lots in the same subdivision on request.
  • Homeowner remodels: see our home remodel porta potty tips.

Towable units for crews that move

Towable units ride on a small trailer so a crew can move 1 or 2 toilets from site to site in a day. Road, fence, pipeline and landscaping crews use towable units when the work moves every few days. Customers may not haul our standard units, so towable units fill that need.

Ask for a towable unit when your crew moves more than once a week. Weekly service still applies, and we find the unit by the location you text us. For utility and plant work, see industrial portable restrooms.

Placement on Upstate red clay

Upstate jobsites sit on red Cecil clay that turns slick and rutted after rain, and Anderson averages about 50 inches of rain a year. Place units on gravel, a driveway edge or plywood, within reach of the pump truck. Stake or anchor units before summer storms.

  1. Pick a spot on the construction entrance gravel, not bare clay.
  2. Keep a clear lane for the service truck; it must reach the unit every week.
  3. Avoid the bottom of a slope where runoff pools.
  4. Keep units away from where excavators and lifts swing.
  5. Ask us to stake the unit when storms are forecast.

Do summer crews need extra service?

Anderson's July average high is 90.7 degrees, and heat speeds up odor in a holding tank. Crews of 10 or more from June to August often add a second weekly service. Placing the unit in shade, with the door facing away from the afternoon sun, also helps.

Extra visits are added to your cycle and shown on the quote. Crews drinking a lot of water in the heat also fill the tank faster.

See summer heat servicing tips for more.

Questions renters ask before booking

How much is a construction porta potty per month?

A standard construction unit starts at $155 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. The first cycle adds a one-time delivery fee starting at $45. Mileage beyond 25 miles and SC sales tax are listed on the final itemized quote.

If I only need it 2 to 3 weeks, do I pay the full month?

Billing runs on 28-day cycles, and the price is the same for 10 days or 28 days in that cycle. A 3-week job is one cycle, with no removal fee at pickup.

My contractor wants about $400 for a porta potty. Is it cheaper to rent one myself?

A standard unit starts at $155 per 28-day cycle plus a $45 starting delivery fee on the first cycle. Ask your contractor whether the $400 covers service and pickup, then compare it with our itemized quote.

Our supplier didn't show. Can you get a toilet to the roofing job today?

Same-day delivery is available Monday through Saturday when you call by noon and the site is in our Upstate route area. A rush charge starting at $65 shows on the quote before you approve it.

I have two job sites a few minutes apart. Can they be on one account?

Both sites can run on one account and one invoice. Each site gets its own placement and weekly service stop on our route.

The county inspector says we need a toilet on site. How fast can you get one out?

Call by noon and we can usually deliver the same day inside our Upstate route. Orders after noon are usually delivered the next morning.

Is there a pickup or removal fee when the job ends?

There is no removal fee. Call or text to schedule pickup, and billing stops with the cycle that contains the pickup date.
