What makes our unit wheelchair-accessible?
Our accessible unit has 4 features a standard unit lacks: a ground-level floor with no step, a door opening about 32.7 inches wide, grab bars beside the toilet and a 60-inch turning space inside. A wheelchair user can roll in, turn around and close the door without help.
Standard units have a raised floor and a narrow door. The accessible unit is built around a wheelchair instead.
- No step: the floor sits at ground level, so a chair rolls straight in.
- Wide door: the opening is 32.7 inches wide and 80.8 inches tall.
- Grab bars: mounted for transfers to the seat.
- Turning space: a 60-inch circle on the floor so the chair can turn.
We call the unit wheelchair-accessible. Whether your event meets the rules also depends on where the unit sits and the route to the door, covered below.
Satellite Freedom tech specs

Under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards, at least 5 percent of portable units in each cluster must be accessible, and that means at least 1 per cluster. Our recommendation goes further: 1 accessible unit at every public event, even small ones. Confirm requirements with your venue or permit office.
The legal minimum and our advice are two different things. The table shows both.
| Units in one cluster | Legal minimum (5%, at least 1) | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 20 | 1 | 1 |
| 21 to 40 | 2 | 2 |
| 41 to 60 | 3 | 3, spread near seating |
| Two separate clusters of 6 | 1 in each cluster | 1 in each cluster |
Where should the accessible unit go?
Place the accessible unit on level, firm ground at the end of a smooth route with no curb, step or loose gravel. Leave at least 60 inches of clear space in front of the door so a wheelchair can line up and the door can swing open. Grass is fine when dry and short.
- Pick the spot closest to parking or the main path, not behind the other units.
- Check the route: no curb, no step, no deep gravel and no steep slope.
- Keep 60 inches clear in front of the door for the chair to approach.
- Avoid low spots that collect rain; wet red clay turns slick fast.
- Keep the accessible unit 10 feet from tents and food prep like the rest.

Who else uses an accessible unit?
An accessible unit helps far more people than wheelchair users. Parents with strollers, guests with walkers or canes, caregivers helping a family member, and anyone needing room to change clothes all use the 66-inch-wide cabin. At a family reunion, the accessible unit is often the most-used toilet on site.
The extra room and the step-free floor make the unit easier for everyone. A caregiver can step in with the person they help and still close the door.
For weddings, the larger cabin is also handy for a bride in a full gown. For a church picnic or a community event, one accessible unit next to the standard units covers most needs.
Delivery needs for a 66-inch-wide unit
The accessible unit is 66 inches wide and weighs about 310 pounds, so the path from the truck needs at least 6 feet of clear width. Most garden gates are too narrow. Plan a spot reachable from the driveway or lot, and tell us about slopes before delivery day.
| Access question | What works |
|---|---|
| Path width | 6 ft or wider |
| Gates | Double drive gates, not a single walk gate |
| Ground | Pavement, packed gravel or dry, level lawn |
| Overhead | About 8 ft clear of branches and wires |
Text us a photo of the spot. If the yard won't work, we set the unit at the driveway edge and keep the route smooth.
Questions renters ask before booking
Do you have handicap units? I only need one of my two to be accessible.
We stock the Satellite Freedom wheelchair-accessible unit, and mixing one accessible unit with one standard unit is a common order. Both arrive on the same truck.
How much is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?
A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $225 for an event or $210 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. The itemized quote is final and lists delivery, mileage beyond 25 miles and SC sales tax separately.
Does your accessible unit meet the ADA rules?
We describe the Freedom as wheelchair-accessible: step-free floor, 32.7-inch door, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space. Whether your event meets the ADA also depends on the route, placement and unit count, so confirm with your venue or permit office.
Do I need an accessible unit for a private backyard party?
Private home parties usually aren't covered by the ADA unit count. If any guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent one anyway, because a standard unit has a raised step and a narrow door.
Can the accessible unit sit on grass?
Dry, short, level grass works. Soft or wet red clay does not, because chair wheels sink and the floor can tilt. On wet ground we set the unit on the driveway edge or plywood.
Can a caregiver go inside with the user?
The Freedom is 66 inches wide outside and has a 60-inch turning space inside, so a caregiver can step in alongside a wheelchair user and still close the door.
Is an accessible unit required on a construction site?
OSHA's construction toilet table counts seats, not accessible units. Some project owners still ask for one in the contract, so check your project specs and add the accessible unit to the same order.
